NVWA shuts down slaughterhouse due to repeated failures

14 February 2025 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

A medium-sized slaughterhouse in the middle of the country was immediately shut down after an inspection by the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). NVWA supervisors found that 22 young goat kids had died in the slaughterhouse's waiting area. The company's accreditation was immediately suspended.

As a result, the company is currently no longer allowed to supply and slaughter animals. Sheep and goats are normally slaughtered in the slaughterhouse, the NVWA reports on its website. It is not the first time that the company has made a mistake. In the past, hygiene violations were found several times. For example, the water in the knife sterilizer was not up to standard and the method used to hoist the animals was not up to standard. As a result, the heads and necks of the animals came into contact with the floor.

NVWA already kept an eye on the company
The slaughterhouse, whose name and location were not disclosed, was already under increased supervision. This means that the company was subjected to additional checks by the NVWA. The company had been informed by the supervisory body that the work would have to be stopped in the event of another serious violation. In February, another serious violation was found.

Slaughterhouses have a duty to provide animals with the right care if they are brought in on a day other than the day of slaughter. According to the NVWA, it appears that the goat kids found died due to a combination of cold and poor resistance.
