Egg processor LPX wants to make high-quality animal feed from residual flows from the egg industry in Dronryp. It has bought the former dairy factory of FrieslandCampina there, which has installations that LPX can also work with.
LPX - Lemmers Protein Exchange - has set its sights on the factory because of the spray drying towers. According to director Joep Lemmers, these can be converted without too much investment for the production of protein powder for premium animal feed. Initially, this concerns animal feed for pets, such as dogs and cats, but LPX also wants to serve the young cattle market.
For the supply of raw materials, LPX can partly rely on residual flows from the Global Food Group in Weert, which is also managed by the Lemmers family. For the rest, residual flows are collected on the free market. The production of animal feed from residual flows from egg processing does not put any extra pressure on the tight egg market, because the residual flows are already excluded from human use.
No information has been released about the purchase price of the factory. FrieslandCampina closed the dairy factory in Dronrijp in October 2022, after which the building stood empty for several years. LPX will gradually restart production after the purchase has been completed. The factory will probably not really start operating again until after the summer.
The factory certainly has more capacity than LPX needs initially, but Joep Lemmers does not see that as a problem. He does not think he will need many staff, but in the long term between ten and fifteen employees will be needed to man the installations.
