Manure processor and energy producer BMC Moerdijk is looking for a strategic shareholder to enable the planned switch from green electricity to green gas. The investment for this step amounts to approximately €190 million.

| BMC Moerdijk had a difficult year in 2023, according to the annual figures released by the Chamber of Commerce. Turnover halved to €28 million, with a loss of €2,8 million below the line. A year earlier, profits were still €24 million. The solvency of over 50% can be called solid. |
The desired partner must have experience with fermentation and the production of green gas, the company reports. BMC Moerdijk is investigating the realization of a fermentation plant at the current location, with which 250.000 tons of poultry manure can be converted into 30 million cubic meters of green gas annually. The captured CO2 from the process (35.000 tons per year) is liquefied and can be used in greenhouse horticulture, among other things. Residual flows are also used for our own energy supply and nutrients are recovered for use as fertilizer.
With this project, BMC Moerdijk wants to contribute to the energy transition and circular agriculture. According to its own calculations, the installation can save up to 206.000 tons of CO2 emissions annually. Director Gerd-Jan de Leeuw: "With green gas, we produce sustainable energy from our own soil and reduce our dependence on fossil energy."
Broad support among poultry farmers
There is now broad support from poultry farmers for the supply of manure. Members of Coöperatie DEP, which has over 400 poultry farmers, have signed declarations of intent en masse for the supply of poultry manure after 2029.
The aim is to make the final investment decision in early 2027. If everything goes according to plan, the production of green gas can start in mid-2029. The project is partly made possible by a subsidy from the Regulation for national EZK and LNV subsidies, Top Sector Energy.
