Dutch inflation is falling

June 3, 2025 - Linda van Eekeres

Inflation in the Netherlands was 3,3% in May according to the CBS rapid estimate. This is a decrease compared to April when prices rose 4,1% on an annual basis. The difference is mainly due to the fact that services rose less sharply in price. The Netherlands is still among the countries in the eurozone with the highest inflation.

In the rapid estimate, CBS does not yet publish the price development for all categories, but it does publish it for some product groups. For example, energy (including motor fuels) was 1% cheaper in May than in May 2024. In April, the difference with a year earlier was -3,2%. Prices of services rose by 3,8% year-on-year in May, while this was 5,6% in April. Inflation in the food, beverages and tobacco group remained high at 7,1% (was 7,2% in April).

Eurozone inflation falls to 1,9%
According to the European calculation method, Dutch inflation was 3,0% in May (4,1% in April). That of the entire eurozone fell from 2,2% in April to 1,9% in May. In Belgium, inflation was 2,8% in May, in Germany 2,1%, in Italy and Spain 1,9% and in France 0,6%.

Food, beverages and tobacco rose by 3,3% in the euro area as a whole, services by 3,2%. Energy prices fell by 3,6% year-on-year in the euro area in May. Excluding energy, inflation in the euro area was 2,5%.
