Cosun appoints new sugar CEO from within its ranks

25 August 2025 - Niels van der Boom

Royal Cosun has appointed Maikel van Bakel as CEO of Cosun Beet Company. The cooperative announced this on LinkedIn. Van Bakel is a director from within the cooperative. He previously served as the general manager of Aviko Rixona.

Successor Mesters
Van Bakel succeeds Paul Mesters, who had worked at Cosun since 2004 and has served as general manager of the sugar division since 2017. Mesters quietly disappeared from the cooperative's scene. Since July 1st, the sugar beet processor has been without a CEO, but that will change on September 1st.

Experience
The newly appointed director is an experienced executive in the processing sector. He previously worked for Lays (PepsiCo), FrieslandCampina, and, since 2013, for Aviko Rixona. Royal Cosun announced in the statement that Van Bakel will continue to build on the company's ambitions, including the Unlock 30 strategy.
