Transport ban imposed after bird flu outbreak

7 October 2025 - John Ramaker

A 10-kilometer transport ban for poultry and eggs has been imposed around a poultry farm in Gasselternijveenschemond, Drenthe. This measure was implemented following the detection of avian influenza on a broiler breeder farm; the 71.000 birds are being culled. This is the first outbreak since March of this year.

Six other poultry farms are now being closely monitored because they are located less than 3 kilometers from the affected farm. The transport ban applies to another 25 farms located less than 10 kilometers from the farm. These farms are also subject to a mandatory indoor housing requirement. The NVWA (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) is conducting further investigations into other farms with which the affected poultry farmer has had contact.

This infection is not a reason to immediately implement a nationwide housing or screening requirement. Last year, a housing and screening requirement was in place between November 20 and May 28.

Due to the increase in outbreaks, vaccine trials have been underway since 2023. A pilot program with two vaccines is running at an anonymous poultry farm until the end of this year. The study is not only assessing the animals' resistance but also whether vaccination will have an impact on trade.
