Dutch table potato exports rose to 71.260 tons in December. Senegal and Germany, in particular, accounted for the increased sales, according to figures from the Dutch Potato Organisation (NAO).
Onion exporters noted at the end of last year that exports of table potatoes to Senegal had received a significant boost. Instead of onions, some of the holds on the ships were filled with table potatoes. This was due to a temporary shortage of Senegal's own potato stocks.
The sudden demand led to 9.407 tons of Dutch potatoes being exported to Senegal last month. This is more than half of the total volume the Netherlands shipped to Africa in December. Mauritania and Ivory Coast also purchased more potatoes than in November. Exports to Mali declined slightly.
Despite the large domestic harvest, the Germans also imported more potatoes from the Netherlands. Nearly 11.000 tons went to their eastern neighbors. The Belgians increased their imports from the Netherlands to almost 29.000 tons.
