Slaughterhouses are victims of civil servant strikes

Several meat companies will be unable to slaughter tomorrow (Tuesday, March 3rd) due to insufficient inspection and supervision capacity due to the nationwide strikes by government employees. The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has informed the companies of this.

VleesNL recognizes the right to take action and hopes that the parties will quickly reach an agreement on a new collective labor agreement. However, according to the trade association, the affected companies are suffering significant economic damage. VleesNL calls on the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) to make every effort to ensure sufficient staffing for all meat companies, even in emergencies such as such a protest. 

"VleesNL will ask the NVWA to clarify what actions have been or will be taken (and what considerations are involved) to prevent this from happening again," the organization stated. If, despite maximum efforts, sufficient capacity is still not available, VleesNL hopes the NVWA will share the pain fairly.
