'Nuance in a polarizing society'

11 August 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

Boerenbusiness is 10 years old this year. In the context of this anniversary we publish on Boerenbusiness various interviews with loyal Boerenbusinesssubscribers. What developments, opportunities and threats do they see? This time it's Pieter Winter's turn.

1. Who are you and what kind of business do you have?
"I'm Pieter Winter, I have arable farming, poultry, biogas and potato dryers."

2. What motivated you to take out a subscription 10 years ago? Has this affected your business?
"To stay informed of current events and the markets. It sometimes helps in choices you make in the market, not always the right ones, by the way."

3. Which page of Boerenbusiness do you always open first?
"Just the first."

4. What development (in the last 10 years) are you most proud of in your company?
"The circularity and circular agriculture that takes place on our farm. And the choice by specializing to an optimum."

5. What hinders you most in your current business and why?"
"Licensing and an unreliable government."

6. Where do you see the most opportunities for your company and why?
"Broadening and further optimizing the company."

7. Are you an 'online' entrepreneur or do you still attach great value to information on paper?
"Both. Of course I receive a lot of information online, but if I really have to assess pieces, I prefer to have this information on paper."

8. Who in agriculture compliments you?
"I do have respect for Marc Calon. He is seen by the dairy farming sector as .... (fill in). I think and know that he enjoys a lot of respect in The Hague. I also have a lot of respect for Louise Fresco. The nuance that she brings in Wageningen and in the media is important in this polarizing society."

9. Where will your company be in 10 years and will you still be a subscriber?
"Our company has many opportunities, of which we will grab a few. It stands or falls with the quality of the staff we grow to."

10. If I'm editor-in-chief of Boerenbusiness wash then...
"I would like to see more articles about the nuances of the social discussions. Name the advantages and disadvantages. Being critical of the sectors, but also mentioning the consequences for society. I am thinking about names that can think bigger. Jacco Vonhof, Louise Fresco, Marc Calon, Ron Methorst (Aeres Dronten), an economist, etc."
