Weed control in winter wheat: clean business
11 September 2017
Weed pressure in winter wheat is increasing. Not only have the mild winters of recent years increased the pressure, but cultivation measures such as non-inversion tillage (NKG) and earlier sowing times also give problem weeds a greater chance.
The unilateral use of substances with the same mechanism of action in the spring can result in the selection of less sensitive weeds. An integrated approach to, for example, darkness or windhalm is becoming increasingly important.
Some important tips:
- Prevent (too) early sowing.
Then a lot of weeds germinate after the crop has emerged. It is better to create a false seedbed and fight the weeds that have arisen therein before sowing the wheat. If sowing must be started early, choose the most weed-free plots for early sowing and sow the plots with a higher weed pressure later.
- plow
This can lower the weed pressure. Darkness needs light to germinate. Plowed seed will lose 70% of its germination every year. With minimal, non-inversion tillage, where the seed stock in the top layer is increasing, it is therefore recommended to plow once every 1 to 3 years.
- On clay soil: 'Sowing time is Herold time!'
Prevention is always better than cure. An autumn application with Herold has advantages. A pre-emergence treatment immediately after sowing gives the best results over the years. Herold is a soil herbicide that must be absorbed with the soil moisture by the roots of the germinating weeds.
- Use the existing soil moisture after seedbed preparation. Therefore spray Herold within 48 hours after sowing.
- Provide the best possible seedbed that is not too coarse.
- Roll the plot after sowing. This encourages rapid germination of the weeds during the period when the herbicide is most active
- Post-Emergence Application
The advice for Herold on lighter soil and on loess.
The best application moment is then the so-called 'point stage', when the wheat has just emerged.
The advantages of Herold at a glance:
- Herold is effective against all major broadleaf and grass weeds in grain.
- Herold is the strongest drug in the context of resistance management against black and wind
- Herold can be used flexibly in w.wheat on clay from immediately after sowing to post-emergence 2 leaf stage. On lighter soils from early post-emergence (point stage).
- Herold is safe for the crop.
- In post-emergence application, Herold is perfectly miscible with insecticides such as Decis against, among other things, aphids (yellowing virus).
Darkness is not to be trifled with. Good control starts with Herold in the autumn.
