Environmental benchmark 2019: recent figures are known

8 March 2019

In February 2019, the environmental yardstick was updated. For about 30% of Bayer's resources, this results in a change in environmental impact points. A number of changes are very significant and it is expected that changes will follow for a number of products.

The overview below shows the changes in a positive sense (a lower score is a green box) or negative (a higher score is an orange box) per product for 2 organic substance classes. The assessment of the products is always based on the highest label dosage, with the associated drift percentage of the label. Click here for a PDF of the table.

An overview of Bayer's products with changes in the environmental impact points.

We disagree with the assessment of a number of products. In our opinion, these points should be lower, based on the assessment of the Board for the Authorization of Plant Protection Products and Biocides (Ctgb). We are in consultation with research agency CLM about this. These include Ascra Xpro, Betanal Maxxpro, Consento, Laudis WG, Fenomenal, Tramat 200 and 500 and Sivanto prime.

Based on this assessment, we examined how we can classify the effects for groundwater according to soils with different percentages of organic matter. The conclusion is that this distinction cannot be made on the basis of the current calculation models of the Ctgb. The environmental yardstick therefore seems to use a too conservative calculation, which may not be scientifically correct. A consultation is also taking place about this.

summarizing

  • There is a change in the environmental impact points for approximately 20 Bayer products, compared to the 2018 yardstick. This mainly concerns significant changes that result in fewer environmental impact points.
  • We are still in consultation with the CLM for a number of products.
  • The calculations in the environmental yardstick for groundwater do not correspond to the registration dossier. The points have therefore been estimated too high for a number of products due to too conservative assumptions.
