Up-to-date disease monitoring in winter wheat

9 May 2019

Most wheat fields are developing well. The rapid growth early in the season stagnates, but this ensures a good and sturdy crop. However, stress has become visible in various fields in the form of blotchy yellow discoloration of the leaves.

This discoloration is probably caused by drought and cold, which made the crop more responsive to the T1 sprays carried out. With the arrival of some more changeable weather, the drawing will hopefully grow out of it soon.

Septoria, yellow rust and mildew active
The septoria present is mainly at the bottom, on the older leaf. In the last few days we have registered some infection periods. Changeable weather is now also forecast, with septoria could expand further. Keep your finger on the pulse of the timing of the upcoming T2 maturation disease control.

Yellow rust has clearly become active in the sensitive varieties. Also on the upper leaf layers we now find sporulating yellow rust. The 'modern' races of this disease can expand very explosively, especially shorter spraying intervals than required.

Especially in the south of the country we find active mildew on various plots; not only on the weaker, secondary stems, but also on the leaves higher in the crop. If mildew is present, it makes sense to add a curative 'mildew agent' to the T2 spraying.

Planning maturation disease control
In most cases, the flag leaf will not take that long anymore, so it is time for maturing disease control. As indicated, the wheat is doing fine. With the current weather, good yields are on the horizon. In order to live up to the high expectations, it is crucial to keep the flag leaf healthy for as long as possible. Septoria and yellow rust lurk. So don't wait too long with the T2 in this relatively early season.

Ascra Xpro
Ascra Xpro has 3 active substances, all 3 of which are very strong against septoria. They also support each other in resistance management! In addition, Ascra also has an excellent effect on other diseases. The formulation of Xpro ensures excellent absorption and rain resistance. Incidentally, the well-known Xpro's Aviator and Skyway can still be used for healthier crops. The advice for the T2 spraying is: 1,1 liters of Ascra Xpro per hectare.

The graph below shows the disease pressure per year and per disease in 3 classes: free of disease, slightly affected (1% to 50% of the plants) and heavily affected (51% to 100% of the plants). The degree of damage is also shown with an average 'barometer score'.

The mean disease pressure at week 18.
