Heat records and phytophthora?

30 July 2019

On Thursday 25 July, heat records were again set in the Netherlands. In combination with the drought, you can say that the Phytophthora is not that bad.

However, we also know that there have been thunderstorms with (a lot of) precipitation in some regions over the past weekend. We also know that phytophthora was regularly found earlier in the growing season. This means that the potato grower must remain alert. In addition, we know that we are increasingly dealing with new more aggressive phytophthora isolates: EU_36 and EU_37.

Currently, a phytophthora fungicide that is strong on leaf disease should be used. In addition, protection against tuber disease is already a requirement. Infinito is the most suitable product to prevent both leaf disease and tuber disease. Research of recent years confirms the strong operation of Infinito.

Summary of 21 trials using purge schedules (same agent and dose applied from emergence to last spray).

Perfect protection
The conclusion from the above research is that Infinito provides perfect protection against tuber disease; under these harsh conditions, given the high percentage of tuberculosis in untreated conditions.

In the research, the most severe conditions are created by artificial infection and irrigation.

Advice InFinito:

  • Standard dosage (preventive and curative): 5 times 1,2 liters per hectare of Infinito.
  • At higher infection pressure: increase the dosage to 1,6 liters per hectare and repeat 2 to 3 times.
  • With the first finds of phytophthora: add 0,2 kilos per hectare of Curzate Partner.
  • Maximum 6,4 liters per hectare Infinito total per growing season.
  • Add a specific agent for protection against Alternaria (for example 1 to 1,5 kilos per hectare of mancozeb).
