Fandango the strongest against downy mildew

31 July 2019

Fandango is a very strong agent in onions. Advisors from various parties draw this conclusion after visiting Bayer's downy mildew test in Oude-Tonge. Fandango has the strongest preventive effect against downy mildew and also has a broad effect against other leaf diseases, such as Stemphylium and leaf spot disease.

The trial conducted by Agro Research International is artificially infested with downy mildew. In addition to an untreated object, the test consists of five schemes in which the most commonly used agents against downy mildew can be compared with each other. Where the untreated object is almost 100% infested and the infestation with a number of practical products increases to more than 25%, the objects with Fandango remain almost free of downy mildew (< 0,4% infestation).

Plus on quality and yield
In the trial, a comparison was also made between the label dosage of Fandango (1,25 liters per hectare) and a reduced dosage of 1 liter Fandango per hectare + 1 kg mancozeb per hectare. This frequently used practical advice also proves to be very strong in this trial. Nevertheless, the label dosage sometimes offers advantages. This makes it not only easier to apply, but also stronger against, for example, leaf spot disease. In addition, the label dosage offers more use of the greening effect and therefore a plus on quality and yield, and there is less use of active ingredient per hectare.

The weather looks set to become more changeable in the coming days. Growers are advised to keep the schedule tightly closed against the various leaf diseases in onions at least until shortly after the crop has been ironed. The advice: Only 1,25 liters per hectare Fandango in an alternating schedule with, for example, 0,5 liters Luna Experience + 2 kg mancozeb. Spray under good shooting conditions. Do not add a wetting agent to Fandango. The agent may be used a maximum of 4 times and has a safety period of 14 days in onions.
