Arable farmers are paying increasing attention to grass control in winter wheat. This is partly due to the declining availability of options for tackling grass in other crops. Fortunately, there are still plenty of resources available for wheat. But which spring herbicide is best suited for your wheat?
Bayer offers a wide range of spring herbicides for winter wheat. There's a suitable solution for every field. We've listed them below.
Atlantis Star: proven power
Atlantis Star has been successfully used for years against a wide range of weeds. Like all the products listed below, it contains mesosulfuron, but also iodosulfuron and thiencarbazone (TCM). Iodosulfuron provides the necessary reinforcement against broadleaf weeds, but more importantly, it offers additional benefits against annual meadow grass and black-tailed godwit. Iodosulfuron therefore broadly supports the effectiveness of mesosulfuron. TCM provides extended effectiveness and ensures good results even with early application. In practice, Atlantis Star is most commonly used at a rate of 0,2 kg/ha.
Pacifica Plus: also in spring wheat
In addition to mesosulfuron and iodosulfuron, Pacifica Plus also contains amidosulfuron, which provides enhanced efficacy against a specific number of broadleaf weeds such as poppy and daisy. Amidosulfuron also has added value on knotgrass.
A key advantage of Pacifica Plus is that it's also approved for use in spring wheat. This is especially useful for farms that grow both winter and spring wheat (or when spring wheat has been overseeded due to winter wheat overwintering).
Othello: Top against resistant darkness
Othello is undisputedly the best solution against resistant blackgrass and resistant ryegrass. At a rate of 2 l/ha, 15 grams of mesosulfuron is applied. This effectively tackles resistant plants. It also contains a relatively high dose of iodosulfuron and diflufenican (DFF). As a result, Othello always provides a few percent extra effectiveness against blackgrass.
Cossack Star: broadest effect
If there's no resistance, Cossack Star is an excellent option. Besides its effectiveness against (non-resistant) grasses, Cossack Star has the broadest effectiveness against broadleaf species. These include chamomile, cleavers, henbit, purple dead-nettle, knotgrass, and all speedwell species. Increasingly common grasses such as annual meadow grass and (rooted) ryegrass are also effectively and early tackled with Cossack Star.
New products with extra impact
In recent years, the pressure from grassy weeds in particular has increased, and the low label doses (approximately 9 grams of mesosulfuron) are often no longer sufficient. Therefore, there is a need for products with a bit more "punch." Altesse and Incelo are two new products that are extra potent against grassy weeds.
Highness
Altesse contains mesosulfuron and iodosulfuron. Iodosulfuron strengthens mesosulfuron against broadleaf weeds, but even more importantly, it offers added value against annual meadow grass and black-grass. The application rate is 1-1,5 l/ha.
Incelo
Incelo contains mesosulforone and thiencarbazone. The thiencarbazone provides some additional long-lasting effect and ensures good results even with early application. The application rate is 0,2-0,33 kg/ha.
Both Altesse and Incelo, along with plant-based oil and any additives, provide a very broad and powerful effect. Both products offer flexible dosages, allowing for the correct amount of mesosulfuron to be used every time. So, no more than necessary, but also no less than necessary. Another nice bonus: both products are slightly more competitively priced than the other products.
