Asbestos: what will your strategy be?

27 July 2017

Much has been said and written about asbestos in recent years, but this issue will continue to occupy many entrepreneurs in the coming years. Which strategy do you choose?

Due to the government decision, asbestos roofs will be banned from 2024. Not everyone is equally enthusiastic about (the implementation of) the ban. Frequently heard comments are:

  • It will not be possible to remove everything in time;
  • There is too little remediation capacity;
  • There will be even higher subsidies;
  • Some even assume that the decision will be postponed or suspended.

All arguments not to take action at this time. On the other hand, there is also a large number of entrepreneurs who have already removed asbestos using subsidies and tax schemes. Are you also faced with the choice? Which strategy do you choose?

When are you going to remove asbestos?
Entrepreneurs almost always have a wish list with regard to investments and maintenance. Investments and major maintenance that improve returns in the company are therefore given priority over matters that are (only) seen as necessary. Asbestos remediation is sometimes necessary because the roof is worn, but often the roof is still fine. However, you must remove the asbestos before 2024.

Is waiting attractive to you?
The asbestos roof will disappear and it may be attractive for you not to wait until 2024. Your acconâ– avm account manager or adviser can work out the various options for you and explain the further conditions. In order to make optimal use of the possibilities in your own situation, a good time planning is important. Discuss this in good time with your advisor!
