VAT farming scheme: don't be boxed in!

30 October 2017

The larger farmers are usually prepared, but smaller farmers, cattle traders and horse owners often no longer see the forest due to all the additional administrative trees. The abolition of the VAT agricultural scheme as of 1 January 2018 is causing a great deal of controversy.

Yet there are also ways to make the abolition easier for yourself as an agricultural entrepreneur. René de Visser, director of tax advice at Accon avm, explains in his blog.

Small entrepreneur has been tired of administrative burdens for years
Smaller farmers have been losing the pleasure of doing business for some time because of the extra administrative burden. When the Turnover Tax Act was introduced in 1968, the red tape meant that many entrepreneurs decided to stop their business. And not entirely incomprehensible: as a farmer you want to do what you are good at.

A similar situation is currently repeating itself. In 2018, the government will oblige the last farmers who are not yet subject to VAT to participate in the VAT scheme. Especially for smaller farmers and horse owners, this arrangement is the administrative last straw that breaks the camel's back.

The abolition of the agricultural scheme is not necessarily a reason to lose the pleasure of doing business; there is a way to get out of the VAT obligation.
