High energy prices affect SDE subsidy

22 February 2022

It has probably not escaped your notice: the prices of many things have risen enormously. The skyrocketing energy prices are certainly in the news. As an entrepreneur, have you received an SDE subsidy (Stimulation of Sustainable Energy Production and Climate Transition)? Then these price increases may have consequences for you. Manager Accountancy Wilmar van Leeuwen is happy to tell you what to expect.

Are you investing in solar panels or other CO2-saving techniques? Then you may be eligible for the SDE subsidy scheme. As the name of the scheme suggests, this subsidy is intended to stimulate sustainable energy production.

The subsidy covers the difference between the cost price and the market value of the energy. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO.nl) grants an advance of 80% of the expected difference for the coming year.

Negative Adjustment
The advances for 2021 have been determined in 2020. At the time, the enormous rise in current energy prices was not taken into account. This means that you may have received too much subsidy. This leads to a negative adjustment. You must then repay part of the subsidy.

The negative adjustment is settled with future advances. In that case, you may not receive an advance for several months.

Advances 2022
In the advances of 2022, the higher market prices are already partly taken into account. As a result, you have less chance that you will receive a negative adjustment (again) in 2023.

What can you do now?
When preparing your annual figures for 2021, you can make a reservation for the expected amounts to be repaid/settled from the SDE subsidy. This allows you to allocate the revenue to the correct year.
