Agriculture and nature go hand in hand

14 April 2017

The role of nature and biodiversity in Dutch agriculture is receiving increasing attention. There are opportunities for agricultural entrepreneurs to respond to this in a way that does not depress business returns, but rather increases them.

'Nature-inclusive agriculture' is a term that comes up frequently this year. Although agricultural entrepreneurs in the Netherlands are already very careful with their land and nature, this is not always clear to the general public. To maintain support, visible additional efforts are needed.

Field margins are a good example of this, which offer advantages for both the general public and the entrepreneur. Flowering field margins are a highly visible measure to which the public reacts with undivided enthusiasm. Together with compensation from a local collective, there is therefore no negative impact on the company's return.

To boost the proportion of herbs in a turf, LG the black-tailed godwit mixture, which contains 38% of native plant and herb species in addition to grass.
