Choose the right green manure and prevent nematode problems

3 July 2017

Soon the harvest season will start again and with that the choice of green manures will come into the picture again. In terms of organic matter and growth habit, the differences between green manures are usually well known, but be aware of the differences in the multiplication or reduction of nematodes!

In many building plans, the multiplication of harmful nematodes is always a threat. There are many types of nematodes, all of which have their own host plants on which they can reproduce. Sowing host plant green manures on a plot where a nematode problem is imminent or already occurring can cause an enormous increase in the population and thus considerable damage to the main crop.

More beet cyst nematodes due to larger sugar beet acreage
Beet cyst nematodes (BCA) are relatively common: in 2006, 41% of the beet plots were slightly to very heavily infected with the white beet cyst nematode. The yield loss can be up to 50%. Now that the sugar beet acreage has increased significantly, the pressure from beet cyst nematodes and Meloidogyne hapla / Meloidogyne fallax is also increasing. Resistant beet varieties limit multiplication, but are still damaged by the puncture of the nematodes!

Nematode propagation of green manures
Therefore, fine-tune the green manure fertilizer to the problem nematodes present on the plot. In the case of green manure mixtures, also take a critical look at the nematode multiplication of each component.

beet cyst nematode is increased by:
Clover, vetches, daikon (tillage) black radish, brown and Ethiopian mustard, buckwheat.

nematode is increased by:
Yellow/brown/Ethiopian mustard, clover, vetches, alfalfa, Japanese oats, buckwheat, nyger, deder.

Root knot nematode is increased by:
Yellow/brown/Ethiopian mustard, Italian ryegrass, Japanese oats; clovers and vetches, buckwheat.

For the widest range of nematode control, the multi-resistant fodder radish Doublet PLUS is the appropriate choice.
