In the autumn of 2015, breeding company LG brought the winter field bean to the Netherlands. This protein crop is sown in the autumn and has a very high yield potential of 6 to 8 tons per hectare. Three field meetings about this crop in July attracted many interested arable farmers, livestock farmers and advisers.
In this second growing season, the crop was sown on approximately 1.000 hectares in the Benelux by livestock farmers and arable farmers. The ground beans form a high-quality concentrate for cattle, poultry and pigs. In the cropping plan of both arable farmer and livestock farmer, the advantages are the early harvest, the nitrogen delivery and nice structure of the soil and counting as a greening crop / third crop in the CAP.
Limagrain and LTO are currently investigating the possibilities for marketing field beans in both animal and human consumption.
