Winter barley varieties for harvest 2018

10 August 2017

The acreage of winter barley in our country doubled in a few years to almost 10.000 hectares. Thanks to the increasing yield potential, together with low cultivation input, the crop can now compete well with winter wheat in terms of yield.

The early harvest of winter barley also provides the necessary spreading of the harvest and every opportunity for successful subsequent cultivation, for example as a green manure crop.

Tolerance to the barley yellowing virus

Rafaela: yellowing virus resistant and highest yield potential
In 2015, the Limagrain barley breeding program brought a first: the first winter barley variety with a natural tolerance to the barley yellowing virus. After 3 years of official testing in Flanders, this variety, with an average yield of 102,2, is firmly at the top in terms of yield potential. The 2017 harvest involved an average of 11,4 tonnes at 5 locations.

The Quadriga variety has also been tested in Flanders for 3 years and scores the same high yields as Rafeala. The Meridian variety has been tested since 2012 and scores above average in yield every year. A very stable, harvest-secure variety.
