Protein cultivation pays off with winter field beans

21 August 2017

After 2 years of practical experience with the cultivation of winter field beans in the Netherlands, it is clear that the crop enables local protein cultivation that is profitable. After an unfavorable season for seed crops, growers have achieved good yields this year.

After the introduction in the autumn of 2015 on approximately 75 hectares, approximately 300 hectares of winter field beans were harvested in the Netherlands this summer. Cultivation takes place at dairy farmers, arable farmers, poultry and beef farmers, mixed farms and organic farmers.

Yields of more than 7 tons of beans per hectare, with an average of 27% protein, were achieved this year, particularly on the well-moisture-retaining soils. Some dairy farmers have also harvested the crop as GPS.
