By harvesting silage maize too early or too late, a lot of nutritional value, and thus yield, is lost. Last year, many maize growers were surprised by a very fast ripening. Follow the ripening carefully and make sure you harvest on time.
Maize for silage provides the highest nutritional value and utilization when harvested at a dry matter content of 35% to 36%. Possible harvest risks and the weather forecast also play a role.
Determine dry matter content
Do not judge the progress of ripening by the state of the crop. With sufficient moisture and average temperatures, the crop can remain very vigorous, while the cob is still ready for harvest. Therefore determine the moisture content of the plant, the ripening of the kernel and the proportion of the cob at several places in the plot.
