With a smart choice of varieties, you lay the foundation for successful wheat cultivation in the 2018 growing season. What are the recommended winter wheat varieties this year?
Highlighted below are some breeds that stand out. Of course there are many other varieties available. Consult your seed supplier or view us step-by-step plan for variety selection.
Baking wheat: choose quality
Baking wheat varieties are all about delivering quality. Select your variety(s) based on numbers for bread and dough quality, which can be found on the Recommended Variety List. The varieties Julius (late) and rgt reform (mid-early) excel in this. As the largest baking wheat in the Netherlands, rgt Reform also shows stable, very high grain yields and hectolitre weights, both on trial fields and in practice. Reform has little trouble with shot and is suitable for wheat on wheat.
Feed wheat: healthy varieties with yield potential
When it comes to fodder wheat, choose firm, healthy varieties, so that the cultivation costs reduce the yield as little as possible. This is why Henrik has been a favorite for years: a high yield potential, firm straw and strong resistance to yellow rust, mildew and fusarium.
Two new low-input varieties are Daytona (mid-early) and Raccoon (mid-late).
Novelties
For sowing in 2018, 3 new toppers in yield potential will be increased this year: the baking wheat Chevignon en apostleand the milling wheat System. These varieties have shown very high yields on the trial fields in Germany, France and the Netherlands.
