For 3 years in a row we can speak of a growing season with extreme weather conditions. According to experts, we will have to learn to deal with extremes in temperature and precipitation in our country. What are the lessons from the 2017 corn season?
The start of maize cultivation could not have been better: seedbed preparation under dry conditions and rising temperatures ensured a smooth emergence. As every year, sowing not too early, in sufficiently warm soil, gave the best results.
Growth peak after drought
We had beautiful summer weather, but in the course of June the corn started to curl locally due to drought. Maize can do with little moisture until shortly before flowering. In the LG breeding program, drought tolerance is also a breeding characteristic, so that varieties deal with moisture even more efficiently. After the welcome rainfall in July, we saw a huge growth peak.
Staggered harvest, high yields
At the beginning of September, the maize was generally formidable and the first plots were chopped under good conditions. A storm on September 13 caused considerable damage to the maize locally, with large differences per maize variety. After a long staggered harvest, most growers have a high yield of good quality maize in the silage.
