The feed efficiency, kilos of measured milk that a cow produces from 1 kilo of dry feed, is one of the most important indicators on a dairy farm. The feed costs determine about 25% to 35% of the cost price, with soilless production up to 65%. The higher the feed efficiency, the lower the feed costs per kilo of milk and therefore your critical milk price.
Increasing the feed efficiency is a practical goal that is immediately noticeable in your financial result. If you can improve the feed efficiency by 0,1 point, for example by feeding more digestible silage maize, this saves no less than €1 in feed costs with a production of 11.300 million kilos of measuring milk!

Ration determines success
A feed material only really comes into its own if a ration is really a ration. Everything has to fit together. It is finding the balance between energy and protein at both rumen and gut level. The roughage quality determines the performance of dairy cattle for 70% to 80%. With additional minerals and concentrates, the last dots are put on the i.
A maize silage can best be used by converting extra energy from cell walls (NDF digestibility) in addition to energy from starch into a higher milk production. With a higher VEM value, the energy density of the ration increases and this leads to more milk.
