The corn root knot nematode Meloidogyne chitwoodi has been spreading strongly in recent years. In 4 years, the number of contaminated seed potato plots in risk areas has doubled.
Meloidogyne chitwoodi already causes major damage to quality, especially in potatoes and carrots, even with low contamination. Chitwoodi is also a quarantine organism. Checking for nematodes and combating infections remains mandatory, also in the new European plant health regulation that will come into effect at the end of 2019.
Seed potatoes, flower bulbs and plants from an infected plot are rejected, resulting in major economic damage. Preventing expansion is therefore of great importance.

Prevent propagation
Chitwoodi spreads through adherent soil, plant material and dusting. The nematode multiplies quickly on many crops and weeds. green manures therefore play a key role in the propagation or control of Meloidogyne chitwoodi.
The emergence of green manure mixtures favors the propagation of chitwoodi. Many popular mixtures contain species that greatly multiply harmful nematodes, including chitwoodi!
Green manures that propagate chitwoodi:
- Non-resistant fodder radish
- Japanese oats
- Italian ryegrass
- Alexandrian shamrock
- Yellow, brown and Ethiopian mustard
- Clovers and deliberations
Do not take any risks with possible nematode infestation and do not sow host plants as green manure.
Resistant fodder radish reduces chitwoodi
In addition to black fallow (difficult to apply in practice), resistant fodder radish is the best way to combat Meloidogyne chitwoodi. radish radish LG DOUBLET combines the highest level of chitwoodi reduction with over 90% reduction in beet cyst nematodes (BCA 1). LG TERRANOVA fights chitwoodi and gives a 70% to 90% reduction in beet cyst nematodes.

New: the first chitwoodi-safe green manure mixture
If you prefer to sow a green manure mixture, then the new LG NEMAREDUX the only safe option. NEMAREDUX is DOUBLET fodder radish that actively reduces chitwoodi, together with facelia and rocket lettuce, which do not increase chitwoodi and provide additional biodiversity.
