Tearing grass under sixth Action Programme

11 April 2018

For sandy or loess soil, the nitrogen application standard is 65 kilograms lower when grassland is split before sowing maize. This will come into effect for derogation companies in 2018, for the other companies in 2021.

Recent research by KTC De Marke shows that no N-fertilization is required after grassland has been split. According to researcher Gerjan Hilhorst (Wageningen Livestock Research), the maize yield on cracked soil, when nitrogen fertilization is omitted (in short: no slurry and no fertilizer), in practice is comparable to fields where fertilization has taken place. Good availability of phosphate is a precondition, but fertilization with potash, sulfur or boron may also be necessary. (source: New Harvest)

Advice CBGV
The Grassland and Fodder Crop Fertilization Committee also indicates that maize quickly receives too much nitrogen after grassland has been torn up. The availability of this nitrogen depends, among other things, on the time of cracking and whether or not the grassland is sprayed to death. That is why the Committee recommends fertilizing 30 kilos of N in a row in the year of cracking.

Sonido corn seed on crack land
Consult with your fertilization advisor and based on soil analyzes what the optimal strategy is for your plots. Our advice is to use corn seed with Sonido disinfection in any case on torn grassland. This is because wireworm damage can occur, up to 3 years after tearing. The risk is greatest in the second year after rupture.
