Tune grass mixture to purpose

12 August 2018

In addition to the harvest of arable crops, maize and this year also grassland renewal (due to drought), August and September are the months for grass sowing. For optimal yield, it is important to properly attune your grass mixture to the intended use.

Your intended use is, for example, primary mowing or also grazing. But increasing the protein yield or extra structure in the ration can also be a use for grassland:

  • Choose pasture and mowing mixtures with mainly tetraploid and diploid perennial ryegrass (HAVERA 1 en HAVERA 4).
  • Mower fields are most productive with tetraploid perennial ryegrass (HAVERA 6).
  • Grass clover provides extra N-space and protein yield (HAVERA 5).
  • Structure-rich grasses give the ration extra prick and taste (HAVERA 7).
  • To produce maximum grass for a short period (1 to 2 years), you do this with Italian ryegrass feed type (HAVERA 2).

Jan Nieuwenhuizen is looking for yield and structure
Dairy farmer and top breeder Jan Nieuwenhuizen from Zevenhoven strives for maximum feed value yield from his land. His grassland is renewed every 4 to 6 years: "A top production and high feed efficiency (1,5 kilos of milk per kilo of dry matter) is only possible with regular grassland renewal."

For the new sowing he opted for HAVERA 7: a real mowing mixture with very high yields and grasses rich in structure. Thanks in part to its top-quality grass silage, the livestock has been one of the highest production companies in the Netherlands for years.

Frans van Kempen wants robust and tasty grass
Frans van Kempen from Boxmeer also has a lot of insight into the roughage intake of his dairy cattle. As soon as parcels contain too few good grasses, they are oversown or renewed, so that the dry matter and nutritional value yield are maintained. He opted for the HAVERA 4 grass mixture, which consists of perennial ryegrass and timothy tea.

Bart de Kruijf produces maximum from roughage
In Werkhoven, dairy farmer Bart de Kruijf strives for maximum production from the feed that he obtains from his 90 hectares of land. As soon as the proportion of cultivation or bad grasses in a plot becomes too high, the plow goes in. On average, that is every 7 years. He sows the fields with HAVERA 1: "Most fields are grazed and mowed, which goes very well with HAVERA 1. It is tasty, energy-rich grass that we can milk well from."

Schothorst: Renewal pays for itself in 2 years
Newly sown HAVERA grass yields more than 3.000 kilos of dry matter and 3.000 kVEM more the year after renewal than a 6-year-old turf. Thanks to the higher feed value and digestibility, the extra milk production per cow can rise to 1,4 liters! This is apparent from yield and feed research conducted by Schothorst Feed Research. Read the results.
