The trial field results from the Dutch independent variety research by Wageningen Plant Research have again been shared in the new Recommended Variety List for Cut Maize 2019. With long-term field trials at 7 locations (for very early/early and mid-early/mid-late) in the Netherlands, an important source of information for variety selection.
It is striking that despite the dry growing season in 2018, the long-term average VEM per kilogram of dry matter and the dry matter yield have not decreased. The starch content is somewhat lower, something that many growers will recognize this year. So the same amount of kVEM per hectare with a lower starch content.
Breeding on digestible yield
This confirms the strategy in our maize breeding: developing varieties with the highest digestible yield. That is the combination of nutritional value and dry matter yield, from the starch and from the residual plant. The residual plant provides half the energy, and in contrast to the starch content we can still gain a lot.
New maize varieties on the Variety List
In the very early and early group 3 new LG varieties have been included. Jumps in very early LG 7005 directly (in yield and quality, with an enormous VEM yield of 22.500 kVEM per hectare)). The variety is a strong addition to the most sown very early varieties in the Netherlands LG 7005 en LG 7005.
In early silage maize is LG 7005 newly included, a dual-purpose type that scores high on dry matter and starch yield. In mid-early silage maize, the variety is LG Severeen new, a very massive variety that yielded more than 23 tons of dry matter per hectare in the trials.
More demand for early varieties
Due to the catch crop requirement of sowing by 1 October at the latest, we expect in 2019 that many growers on the sandy and loess soils will switch to very early and early varieties. The figures show that the VEM yield of these early LG 31 varieties is hardly inferior to the later varieties.
Starcover seed coating on 8 maize varieties
Due to the increasing pressure on chemical seed disinfection, Limagrain started years ago with the development of a biostimulant that is added to the maize seed as a coating. In 2018 was the introduction of Starcover; a natural coating that stimulates root growth and makes soil-bound phosphate and trace elements more absorbable.
For the 2019 season, Starcover is available on 8 varieties of LG. It is a sensible investment in your seed, especially now that the active ingredient in Mesurol is no longer permitted after 2019.
