Tips for green manures in Combined statement

10 May 2019

The Ecological Focus Area (EA) is also discussed in the Combined Assignment, which can be completed up to and including 15 May. Below are some tips and points for attention regarding the implementation of the ecological focus area with green manures as catch crop.

De green manures as catch crops are specified per plot as a successive crop, which can then be ticked as an ecological focus area. The start date of the 8-week period and the green manure type must also be entered. The choice of plots for the ecological focus area can depend on several practical considerations.

Listed below for the Limagrain CAP blends are for which purposes they are suitable and in brackets how they count in the Combined Statement. The number is the category and the name is the main component of the mixture.

nematode control
On plots where harmful nematodes (can) cause problems, nematode control is the main goal of green manures. Beet cyst nematodes and corn root knot nematodes (M. chitwoodi, fallax and hapla) are best controlled with the greening mixtures Double Plus (1. fodder radish), Nemaredux (1. fodder radish) and Terranova Plus (1. fodder radish).

The Nemaredux mixture also contributes to the beautification of the landscape. With the root lesion nematode Pratylenchus penetrans you choose Silk Plus (1. or 2. Japanese oats).

Late sowing (at the latest 15 October)
The maintenance period for green manures as catch crops this year is 8 weeks. For later sowing, you need a green manure that develops quickly and winters easily. Salon Plus (1. yellow mustard) and Silk Plus (1. or 2. Japanese oats) meet both characteristics. ultimate plus (1. Fodder radish) is less suitable for later sowing (after September 1), but is easy to work under in the spring due to its good wintering.

Mow or graze
Certain catch crops may be grazed and mowed for forage during or after the 8-week period, provided this ground remains sufficiently covered and the catch crop has sufficient regrowth capacity. The mixtures Engels Plus (1. Perennial ryegrass) and Italian Plus (1. Perennial ryegrass) are the most suitable for this.

Sunflowers: appearance and organic matter
Sunflowers are newly admitted as a catch crop this year. Flowering sunflowers in greening mixtures give a very attractive appearance. In addition, it ensures good rooting and a lot of organic matter (Sunflower is a C4 plant). For the greening mixture Orgamax (1. sunflowers), it is important to sow this no later than mid-August.
