Organic matter important due to weather extremes

June 17, 2019

The extremes in the weather have become an integral part of the Dutch growing season. We are dealing with drought and heavy showers (with enormous amounts of precipitation). Organic matter in the soil is necessary to limit the effects of this as much as possible.

Green manures make a major contribution to organic matter. The EOS (Effective Organic Matter) is the organic material that can still be found in the soil after 1 year.

However, increasing the organic matter in the soil takes a long time. In combination with organic manure, crop residues and compost, green manures are an important part of the menu. An increase of 1% in the organic matter in the soil can delay irrigation by 2 to 3 weeks, because on average it stores 7 millimeters (sand) and 9 millimeters (clay) more in the soil.

Green fertilizers for water infiltration
In addition to the drought, heavy showers also play a role. With long-term use of green manures, the water infiltration doubles, because of the effect on soil crumbs. In addition, it reduces the run-off of nutrients and crop protection products.

On soils prone to nematodes, Doublet PLUS (radish radish), Nemaredux and Silke PLUS (Japanese oats) are the best green manure fertilizers that provide a lot of organic matter. If nematode reduction does not play a role, Orgamax is ideal (with sunflower and Japanese oat massage waxes, mixed with yellow mustard).

Green Cover
The greening mixtures in the GreenCover package are each composed for a specific purpose. With 2 to 4 varieties that complement each other, with GreenCover you always choose the optimal green manure. You can find a handy selection filter at www.lgseeds.nl/groenfertilizers.
