Fertile soil with green manures

12 July 2019

The basis for successful cultivation is a fertile soil with a rich soil life, sufficient nutrients and a good soil structure. Due to the shrinking possibilities in fertilization and crop protection, the importance of soil fertility is increasing rapidly. Green manures make a major contribution to its maintenance and improvement.

Green manures stimulate soil life in two ways. They cover the soil and excrete root exudates that feed the soil life. The root and plant residues of green manures also serve as food. Every successful green manure crop fulfills this role to a similar extent.

Organic matter
Organic matter is the engine for natural soil fertility. Soil life, mineral supply, soil structure, water and oxygen management: everything in the soil interacts with organic matter. Since organic matter is continuously broken down, there must be a sufficient supply of easily degradable and more stable organic matter. Green manures can supply a substantial amount.

Mixtures of green manures can achieve the highest supply of organic matter. LG ORGAMAX, with 50% sunflower, has been specially formulated for that purpose.

Nutrient Capture and Delivery
Green manures store the remaining nutrients after the main crop, so that they do not leach out. In addition, in symbiosis with the soil life, they release soil-bound nitrogen, phosphate and potassium, which in turn benefit the succeeding crop. A successful one fodder radish yields 45 kg N, 4 kg P and 30 kg K in the spring.

Soil structure
Green manures improve the soil structure through their rooting and the supply of organic matter. Long-term use of green manures doubles the water infiltration and can delay irrigation by 2 to 3 weeks. Even in a short growth period of 8 weeks, fodder radish and yellow mustard can root intensively through the soil and thus make it more airy. The organic matter improves air and water management, reduces silting and makes clay soil more workable.
