The new Recommended Variety List for winter wheat

10 September 2019

As a pivotal crop, grain is of great added value in the construction plan. The targeted choice of varieties always has a positive effect on the yield. A valuable source of breed information is CSAR's new Recommended Breed List 2020.

The Variety List contains the results of the independent variety research conducted by WUR Open Crops. Per region (north, center and south) the wheat varieties are tested at 2 locations in 2 treated and 2 untreated replicates. The number of untreated (without any disease control) trials has been expanded due to decreasing availability of plant protection products. The varieties that still score above average after 3 years of research are included on the list. You can find the new Variety List 2020 here.

Baking wheat: quality is leading
In the baking segment, quality is decisive for all sales opportunities. The quality varieties with a high yield potential and disease resistance ensure the best yield here:

  • Rgt Reform is still the number 1 when it comes to baking quality. In addition, the variety has been showing stable yields and high hectolitre weights since 2016.
  • LG Initial is a new German baking wheat, with firm straw, strong resistance to yellow rust and good baking quality.
  • Chevignon is also a new baking wheat and has a high yield potential: more than 5% above average in, among other things, the Flemish variety trials.
  • Johnson is also a top yielder, but only available from the 2021 season.
Very nice yields of Chevignon propagation in 2019.

Reliable filling and feed wheat
New to the Recommended Variety List are the LG filling wheats:

  • LG Cambria: super-healthy wheat, highest yield in the study without disease control (106, 107).
  • LG Vertical: a very firm German wheat, with the highest yield in the Southwest (104).

A permanent choice of many growers has been Henrik (feed Apartments (times), because of the special operational reliability. The race Raccoon should also be mentioned as a particularly low-input variety: with minimal cultivation costs, this healthy feed wheat delivers very high grain yields.
