This is how you get the highest return from your maize cultivation

6 January 2020

Maize is a valuable component in the rations of many livestock farmers. With proper cultivation and conservation, silage maize provides a tasty, constant feed that provides a lot of glucogenic energy. The highest yield yields maize that fits perfectly in the ration and also delivers the highest kVEM per hectare.

This VEM yield is the sum of the dry matter yield and the feed value. A high yield is important, but it is the feed value and utilization in the barn that ensures the real return. The highest kVEM/ha yields more milk from own feed and lower feed costs.

Digestibility makes the difference
Maize for silage consists of 40% kernels and 60% residual plants. The starch-rich grains provide an average of 45% of the VEM and the residual plant 30%. The amount of VEM that comes out of that residual plant depends on the cell wall digestibility. Every 5% better digestibility provides an extra 30 VEM/kg ds. Therefore, always choose for silage maize varieties that excel in total kVEM/ha.

More milk from own feed = lower feed costs
Getting more kVEM from your hectares means that you can produce more milk from your own feed per hectare. Accountants and study clubs see that there are large differences between companies. For example, if you increase from 4.000 kg of measuring milk/ha from your own feed to 8.000 kg, you will already save €400-€500 per hectare in feed purchases!

Corn that fits in the ration
A smart variety choice starts with a clear goal. Does a (very) early or a somewhat later variety fit on the plot? And which type of maize fits best in your ration? For example, in a grassy ration you need starchy maize, with a higher maize proportion a well-digestible residual plant is important. Advice
Start maize cultivation next year with a well-considered choice of variety, in the right earliness group with a focus on the kVEM per hectare. I would be happy to give you free advice! See how that works in the video or take under video contact me.
