ProteinChallenge participants see fast growth in field beans

25 May 2023

Due to the growing interest in protein cultivation, breeder LG is organizing a Protein Challenge together with NAJK this year. Seventeen young growers will get started with this field beans. The participants see their winter and summer field beans growing fast, they say.

A varied club of young arable farmers and dairy farmers from all over the Netherlands keep each other informed about their field bean cultivation in a Whatsapp group. They are supervised by specialists from LG and at meetings they receive all the information to make the cultivation successful.

'Hope to learn more about cultivation'
Rik van der Weele is one of the seventeen participants. "This is my fourth year growing field beans and I was immediately excited about this one challenges. I mainly participate to learn more about cultivation. Field beans are still relatively new to many growers and not the easiest crop to grow. We have both dairy cattle and arable farming on our farm. Although I have more with the cows, I am perhaps a little more interested in cultivation than the average farmer. Field bean cultivation at our company is a nice combination of both branches, we feed the beans to the cows. The protein content in the milk is therefore higher and it is of course very interesting in the new CAP."
