Practical afternoon Geesbrug about yellow pea cultivation

June 11, 2025

Yellow peas are a high-quality source of protein and starch, a nice rest crop that can be incorporated into both arable and dairy farms. The crop has a lot of potential, but is still relatively unknown in the Netherlands. That is why pea breeder Limagrain and processor Emsland-Stärke are organizing an inspiring practical afternoon on Wednesday, July 2 in Geesbrug (Drenthe).

Yellow peas can be used as a dry harvested product as a valuable raw material (protein-starch-fibre) for the food and feed industry. Within dairy farming, a mixed crop with grass or spring barley – harvested as Whole Plant Silage – is considered a healthy and harvest-secure roughage. Due to the natural nitrogen fixation, low input requirement and early harvest, growing yellow peas also brings important advantages for the soil and crop rotation. It is a versatile rest crop that fits in perfectly with the eco-activities of the CAP.

The field meeting will focus on the cultivation and marketing of yellow peas, as well as storage and feeding on livestock farms.
