The cases of African swine fever that have recently emerged in wild boars in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia - the count is now at five - are caused by a different variant of the virus than the one that previously broke out in West and East Germany, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) has determined.

Several dead wild boars have been found in the German municipality of Kirchhundem (North Rhine-Westphalia), which may be infected with African Swine Fever (ASF).

The pig farming producer organisation (POV) calls on owners of corn plots to pay close attention when harvesting corn. The reason is that there are often wild boars in corn plots, and when an infection occurs in the Netherlands, African swine fever (ASF) can spread quickly.

Trade organizations Livestock & Logistics and the Pig Farming Producer Organization (POV) are concerned about the spread of African swine fever (ASF). That is why both organizations call on people not to bring food from their holiday destination to the Netherlands and not to leave any rubbish behind in nature. The call came on the day that the virus was found much closer to the Netherlands.

China lifted its export ban on Belgian pork on Friday, January 12. In 2018, China imposed the ban after an outbreak of African Swine Fever.

China has removed import restrictions on Russian pork. The decision is the result of a regionalization decision regarding the Russian pork market. This appears to make it even more difficult for Europe to export pork to China.

African Swine Fever (ASF) continues to spread. The virus has been found among seven dead wild boars in Sweden. For the time being, infections have not occurred at Swedish pig farms.

African swine fever (ASF) is still rampant in Europe. At the moment, the bulk of the infections are still taking place in the Balkans. In addition, there are currently particular concerns about Italy, where swine fever has been detected for the first time in one of the most important regions for Italian pig farming.
