Can't get any movement in diesel price

10 July 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 5 comments

Renewable energy varies greatly in price within a week. While the price of agricultural diesel has been fluctuating around €0,90 for weeks.

Just like last week, LTO noted a price of just over €0,90 for agricultural diesel (incl. member discount, excl. VAT, when purchasing 2200-4000 litres).

More oil production?
In view of the positive economic developments and the absence of a new corona wave in Europe, a price increase is obvious. As soon as the oil-producing countries united in OPEC, decide to start producing extra oil again, that effect can be negated. This meeting is scheduled for September. Moreover, there is no guarantee that the corona virus will not resurface in Europe and that it will remain with local lockdowns in some European countries.

Also an extra supply of nuclear energy?
The gas price also shows a picture of stable to slightly increasing prices. The electricity market is showing more movement. Because the French nuclear power stations turn out to need less time for maintenance than originally thought, power from nuclear power stations will be back on the market in the short term. The production of the French nuclear power plants is so large that it can account for as much as 10% of the total electricity production in the EU. Extra supply will therefore certainly have a price dampening effect on the price of electricity, but also sustainably generated electricity, oil and agricultural diesel derived from this.

Renewable energy market erratic
Last weekend, the price of renewable energy from solar and wind was negative for the first time in a long time. In Germany an exceptionally high percentage of almost 80% electricity from sun and wind was achieved. Especially in the coastal areas there was a lot of wind last weekend. During the week, the price of sustainably generated energy rose to a level that had not been reached for a long time: € 40 per megawatt hour.

Dirk that is normal diesel that is also refueled at the pump, only because larger batches above 1000 liters are purchased, a lower price has to be paid for it, with 30.000 liters full load that price is the lowest.

why is it called agricultural diesel?
or is that a different kind than that used in road transport.
after all, this sector purchases such large volumes (30000 ltr).
no farmer does that.

Dirk : I think the name agricultural diesel is from earlier times . There are contracting companies that purchase a full load per week in the periods of maize harvest, eg companies with 40 to 60 units of tractors, cranes, lorries are no longer an exception.
