Animo mono-manure fermentation among farmers is increasing

15 July 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The enthusiasm for mono-manure fermentation among dairy farmers is increasing, FrieslandCampina points out. Not only is confidence in technology and the revenue model growing, but the current ammonia discussion also plays a role in this. The technique has the potential to generate an additional yield of €0,04 per kg of milk and can halve ammonia emissions.

FrieslandCampina reports this in a statement. With the Jumpstart project, the dairy cooperative is guiding its member dairy farmers towards mono-manure fermentation. About 30 Jumpstart installations are expected to be operational or under construction by the end of the year. According to FrieslandCampina, anyone who is interested would do well to register as soon as possible. The SDE subsidy scheme will change.

Choice of 3 suppliers
According to producer Biogas Plus, a small number of tickets are still available, which they say 'provide guaranteed income for the next 12 years'. FrieslandCampina has added Biogas Plus as a partner in the project, where the companies Biolectric and HoSt had previously joined the mono-manure fermentation program. The member dairy farmers can now choose from 3 suppliers.

Technical adjustments to the digesters have resulted in improved conversion, explains Jan-Willem ter Avest, FrieslandCampina spokesperson. He refers to the difficult start of the project. The mono-manure digesters only convert cattle manure into biogas on the dairy farm and do not use co-products.

Performance contract
The core of the matter now is that the conversion (how much of the manure entering the installation can actually be effectively converted into usable biogas) is closely monitored. The supplier of the installation commits itself to a minimum performance. In other words, a performance guarantee. Ter Avest: "This forces the supplier to continue to make improvements, if necessary, until the desired level is reached. This protects the farmer and his financier. Of course we cannot disclose technical details, but Biogas Plus has a number of fundamental improvements To achieve the right performance, they have qualified as a partner of Jumpstart."
