Farmer increasingly important as energy producer

24 July 2020 - Erik Colenbrander

The price of agricultural diesel is slowly creeping up. The price of sustainable energy also shows little movement. It is crystal clear that the share of sustainable energy is increasing rapidly, and so is the importance of the farmer in this.

This year, the share of renewable energy in the total in the Netherlands is 14%, higher than expected. Partly thanks to the purchase of Danish sustainable energy. Solar energy production has increased by 2019% compared to the first half of 40.

Farmers' interest in sustainable energy is growing rapidly
And that while Dutch farmers already generated 50% more solar energy last year than in 2018. This is apparent from recent figures from Statistics Netherlands. It is obvious that the agricultural sector will again show a sharp increase in the production of sustainable energy this year.

By 2030, 70% of all electricity must come from sun, wind and water. According to Statistics Netherlands, farmers play an important role in this process. Biogas is not included in these figures, but it certainly also plays a role in the sustainable energy issue. Already 1 in 3 farmers produces sustainable energy on their own farm. Moreover, the share of electricity in total energy demand has also doubled since 1980.

Given the weather forecast, no extremes are to be expected in the production of solar and wind energy in the coming weeks. Although the longer-term forecast is very uncertain, it is certain that cold, stormy and persistently wet weather is not on the program in the first part of August. But also no persistently dry, sunny and high summer weather. So no peaks in wind force and/or sunshine.

Agricultural diesel stable over 90 cents
The demand for oil and other forms of energy, whether sustainable or not, is only increasing slowly. The corona developments are decisive and lead to restraint. In addition, unemployment is likely to rise to unprecedented levels. And a shrinking economy means a decrease in energy demand.

Returning to the 'old normal' seems impossible in the short term. This means that the daily price of agricultural diesel will not be much higher than €0,90 per liter for weeks to come. Since the price of gas and electricity is largely linked to the oil price, no major price fluctuations are to be expected for these segments in the energy market.
