Never before has so much wind energy been produced in one day as last Wednesday, when it was stormy weather in large parts of the Netherlands for almost 1 hours. Energieopwek.nl registered more than 100.000 MWh of electricity from wind in 1 day for the first time.
Good for more than 30% of the average electricity consumption and 6% of the average total energy consumption in the Netherlands in 1 day. The peak in yield also resulted in very fluctuating daily prices for green electricity. In the coming weeks it is obvious that there will be no peaks in wind or solar energy, given the weather forecast. Although last Wednesday's storm only became visible on the weather maps about 4 days in advance.
Fluctuating gas price
At the same time, prices on the gas market also fluctuated sharply last week. This is partly due to the strongly fluctuating energy yields from solar panels and wind turbines in August. To buffer the fluctuating supply of solar and wind energy, gas is needed to produce electricity and, moreover, no ships full of liquefied natural gas are floating in the Atlantic Ocean, awaiting new storage capacity in Europe. The lack of storage capacity that threatened to arise in the middle of the corona crisis has disappeared again.
The strongly fluctuating gas price is also caused by conflicting reports about the maintenance of pipelines and factories, which account for a large share of the gas supply in Europe. Given the time of year with the 'r' in the month ahead, it is obvious that the demand for gas will increase and the average price will rise further.
Oil price stable factor
According to analysts, the price of CO2 rights has also been the subject of speculation for weeks and is constantly rising in price. The only stable factor in the energy market in total, fossil and sustainable added together, is the oil price. The price of oil and agricultural diesel has hardly changed since mid-June. Agricultural diesel still costs about €0,90 per litre, including discounts and surcharges and excluding VAT.
The agreements on oil production that the major oil-producing countries have made with each other are the main explanation for the stable oil price. The question is what effect the new hurricane season will have in the Mexican Gulf region. This also applies to the supply of liquefied natural gas that is transported by ships.
