More and more dairy farms have solar panels installed on the roof of their stables. This year, almost a third of dairy farms run partly on solar energy. That is 5,4 percentage points more than in 2019.
This is reported by AgriDirect, which bases these figures on a poll among dairy farms in their database. About 6.000 companies have shared information about their business activities, such as the use of alternative energy, according to the marketing organization.
This shows that 32,5% of dairy farmers use solar panels on their farms. A year earlier this was still 27,1%. Larger companies make the most use of solar energy. For example, about 35% of farms with at least 150 cows have solar panels. In farms with 50 to 100 cows, this percentage is around 25%.
Solar energy is by far the most popular way of generating alternative energy. Only 2,4% of dairy farmers have wind turbines and less than 1% use biogas or geothermal energy. 64% indicate that they do not (yet) use any form of alternative energy.
