Nestlé is investing in one of the largest solar parks in the United States (US). With more than 800 hectares of solar panels, the food company wants to take a major step forward in its sustainability ambition.
Taygete I is the name of Nestlé's solar farm that should be operational in the first quarter of 2021. About 800 solar panels will be installed on more than 856.000 hectares. This will make it the largest solar park in the state of Texas and will be the fifth largest solar park in the US.
Largest direct investment
For Nestlé, this is the largest direct investment in a renewable energy project to date. In addition, the company will completely purchase the energy generated by the solar park over the next 15 years. Production is estimated at 750.000 megawatt hours (MWh) per year.
Nestlé's investment should contribute to a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions. Like this the company recently announced halve CO2 emissions over the next 10 years to reach net zero by 2050. “To achieve this goal, we innovate company-wide, from the ingredients we use, to packaging, manufacturing and transportation,” said Jim Wells of Nestlé USA.
4 billion pizzas
The solar park would be good for an annual CO2 reduction of 530.280 tons. According to Nestlé, this is equivalent to the emissions from making 4 billion frozen pizzas. “With this move, we are also on track with the sustainability ambition in our US manufacturing facilities,” said Wells. "We aim for a CO2 reduction of 35% per tonne of product by the end of 2020."
