The Netherlands is increasingly switching to renewable energy. The share of renewables in the energy mix in 2020 is 11,1%. This is evident from the preliminary figures from Statistics Netherlands. In 2019 it was still 8,8%.
The increase is largely due to the increased capacity of wind energy and solar power. But the use of biomass also increased. Mainly as fuel that is co-fired in coal-fired power stations.
The consumption of solar energy grew by 47% compared to 2019. The capacity here was expanded significantly last year from 7.200 MW in 2019 to 10.000 MW in 2020. The realization of the new wind farm off the coast at Borssele resulted in a significant increase. wind at sea. Last year, however, the necessary wind turbines were also installed on land. In total, the capacity has increased from 4.500 MW at the end of 2019 to 6.600 MW at the end of 2020. However, with a share of 54% of all biofuels, biomass still remains the largest source of sustainable energy.
Less energy used
The total energy consumption in the Netherlands in 2020 was 2.000 PJ, approximately 100 PJ less than in 2019. That is the use of electricity, fuels for transport and energy for heating buildings and processes in industry. According to the CBS, the fact that the total energy consumption is lower is mainly due to the far-reaching corona measures, which means that less fuel is used for transport.
Despite the expansion of the share of renewables, the Netherlands is not yet achieving the 14% agreed in a European context for 2020. In June 2020, the Netherlands therefore concluded an agreement with Denmark for the transfer of 8 TWh to 16 TWh.
