Biogas as an alternative to electric vehicles

June 2, 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Bio-LNG (liquefied gas) must become the alternative to diesel for heavy vehicles and in the logistics sector. That is the view of the German energy company Liqvis and EnviTec Biogas. The companies have therefore concluded an agreement for the production and supply of bio-LNG. From October 2022, bio-LNG can be refueled at the Liqvis filling stations.

The EnviTec biogas plant in Güstrow - Germany's largest biogas plant - is being converted for this purpose. The plant now produces bio-methane that is fed into the natural gas grid. From the fourth quarter of 2022, 9.000 tons of bio-LNG must be produced annually. The factory site will be expanded by 20 hectares for this purpose. Total conversion costs are estimated at €35 to €40 million.

Agricultural residual flows
The current factory processes approximately 400.000 tons of substrate annually, mainly silage maize, but also silage and whole-plant silage grains. In the new situation, this will be reduced to 150.000 tons and the emphasis will be on agricultural residual flows. In addition, the residual heat created during fermentation is used to generate 1,5 MW of electricity. “By entering the fuel market, we want to counterbalance electric vehicles,” said Olaf von Lehmden CEO of EniTec Biogas in a commentary on the website. "As a green fuel, bio-LNG can make an important contribution to reducing CO2 emissions in the logistics sector".
