Shell is going to build a biofuel factory. In the factory, the company wants to produce sustainable jet fuel and biodiesel, partly from waste but also from vegetable oils.
The company announced this today (Thurs. 16 September). The new factory, which is to replace the refinery in Pernis, will have a capacity of 820.000 tons per year, making it the largest of its kind in Europe, according to Shell.
The investment is in line with the oil group's objectives to reduce CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030. The company plans to capture the CO2 released during the production process and store it in an empty gas field in the North Sea .
Waste and vegetable oil
In the factory, waste oils and fats such as frying fat, animal fat and industrial and agricultural residual flows will be processed into fuel. This will be supplemented with sustainable vegetable oils, such as rapeseed oil, until more sustainable alternative raw materials come onto the market. Shell emphasizes that no virgin palm oil is used as a raw material.
Shell plans to convert the refineries into 5 energy and chemical parks. “Today's announcement is an important part of the transformation of one of our largest refineries into an energy and chemical park,” said Huibert Vigeveno, Shell Downstream Director in a press release. "An energy and chemical park that provides customers with the low-carbon products they need."
