This plot of Innovators between Dronten and Lelystad owned by Jaap Lodders was planted in mid-April.
He uses a weather post to monitor the situation above and below the crop.
Lodders hasn't rained here yet.
Lodders is not irrigating the potatoes for the time being. The plant must first create roots, otherwise it will become lazy.
Slightly deeper in the ground, the clay still sticks well.
In those 10 weeks of drought, 1 rain of 15 mm fell. The beets have responded well to this.
The wheat has not absorbed the nitrogen well. The crops suffer more from the heat than from the drought.
Lodders waters the chicory and carrots sown on Tuesday and on Monday.
The seed lies in bone-dry soil. This year Lodders watered the beets for the first time to emerge (different plot).
Dig among the fresh garlic. It looks nicely rooted. Other years the grower irrigated this crop, but he has come back from this.
Garlic is bad for watering. A bacterium can be added that leads to rot and then circles. On the other hand, the sphere must reach a certain diameter.
The red cabbage really needs moisture, not heat.
A cabbage that continues to grow well and gets stress in it and grows again later can get brown leaves. Also called tobacco leaf. Then the factory rejects the batch.
There is not much going on on this lot. Only there are fleas in it. A disadvantage of the drought. If you do nothing, the plant will wither.
Shallots for planting material for Gourmet BV. This crop is also never irrigated by Lodders. The bulbs can easily grow out of size.
Lodders is satisfied with the rooting of the shallots. In fact, he thinks the drought is not too bad for the entire company. The heat does more damage and stops growth.

Turns out from a tour of fields

Heat has more impact than drought

30 May 2017 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

He is not so afraid of the drought, but of heat days such as Monday 29 May. Boerenbusiness made a tour of the fields of Jaap Lodders, arable farmer in Dronten and Swifterbant on Tuesday morning, May 30.

You can see in the photos whether it is really as dry as expected.
