The Thursday of Potato Europe has only 1 theme: wet. In the days leading up to the fair, the site had already been transformed into a gigantic mud mess. Heavy rainfall on the only opening day made matters worse.
On Wednesday it was already decided to only allow self-propelled harvesters. They were able to distinguish themselves under the circumstances. A wet edition is good for that.
The towed machines stood idle on the unloading site. In addition to the well-known green and red, Ropa was also present.
In the morning the weather was beautiful. The fact that the fair already opened its doors at 8 a.m. was therefore a small advantage. Not every exhibitor seemed to be aware of this. The build-up continued while the visitors were already walking around.
The Platinum edition of the Varitron 470 has been improved in details. The controls have been significantly updated, the haulm topper has been given a spreader and the front wheel can extend. For example, a wider wheel fits underneath, which reduces tracks.
Dewulf was the first to present their completely new Torro bunker harvester in absentia. A mobile unloading bunker will follow in 2018. The Inclino Master system keeps the harvesting head continuously parallel to the field while the harvester is kept horizontal. This is patented and will be shown at Agritechnica.
The fall-through mat is mounted bent. That limits the drop height. The cleans comes standard with 2 flat hedgehog belts with 3 and 2 drift rollers. The rollers on the 2nd belt can be replaced by a studded belt with 3 rows of rubber fingers.
The harvesting head is mounted with a quick-release fastener (left) and a catch hook (top right). Within minutes you can exchange it for an onion beak. A 1.65m jaw is optional, the discs secured with a spring. The digging mat can be hydraulically driven.
Ploeger will only show its new harvester in Hanover. The striking yellow AR-4BX did an excellent job in the wet and confirmed the reputation of the brand from Roosendaal.
The Innovator potatoes were harvested for storage. There was also a lot of criticism about this, because the harvesters had to stop at the slightest bit of rain. Tippers ended up with a full load in the rain because the logistics stopped.
4 years ago, unloading was a problem. The harvest demo was cancelled, which resulted in a lot of criticism. Despite evaluations, little seems to have changed. The single road plates and the paved terrain didn't help much. Unloading in the cistern was a struggle.
More attention for alternative unloading methods such as transfer trucks. The Belgian Fliegl importer Ludo Pauwels developed the Pom-Over a few years ago. The Belgian market is large for ex-country delivery.
The odd one out was Scotts from Scotland. It showed a wagon harvester and stock harvester. In the United Kingdom, the harvester is and remains lord and master.
Mechanization company and manufacturer Veenma from Dokkum used an old Krakei harvester to build a special box harvester for seed potato trunks. The rear is equipped with a lifting system for the boxes.
Grimme transferred the potatoes with their Clean Loader transfer station. The first machines have now been sold. This one to a potato grower in the Noordoostpolder.
Dewulf was the only manufacturer to enter the field with a 2-row harvester. The RF3060 has the Flexyclean system where you can slide a bypass over the axial roller set. This was not required in Emmeloord.
The first storm came over around 11:XNUMX am. Earlier than predicted. The little bit of wood chips was of no avail. The site had already been destroyed during construction. Stallholders who had set up outside their wares were therefore furious. There are strong doubts about the suitability of Emmeloord as a location.
Vlaming from Zwaagdijk-Oost is the brand new importer of the English spray brand Landquip. A worn version was on display at the fair, but there are also pulled models and self-propelled vehicles that will be offered.

Potato Europe 2017

Fight against the elements in Emmeloord

15 September 2017 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 1 reaction

The Dutch edition of Potato Europe will go down in the books as a water and mud feast. Thursday started well, but soon heavy rain showers threw a spanner in the works. The weather cannot steer the exhibition organization, but the criticism is nevertheless not tender.

When the heavens opened at about 10:30 a.m., visitors to the outside area had little business. Accessibility only got worse, a huge blow to the companies. Some are therefore furious with the organization.

Before the Agritechnica, many manufacturers, especially the international players, keep their powder dry. Grimme did not show any new product. That makes Potato Europe purely a network fair. In the big tent it was pleasantly busy, but not excessively. When it rained, the tents outside were packed.

It is difficult to arm yourself against so much rain, but the organization has dropped a lot of stitches in my eyes. Clumsy preparation and poor anticipation has made many things worse. The terrain had already been destroyed by the telehandlers or something similar to place the material. Water drainage was not thought about, not prepared and not taken care of. I do not understand the agreements about the potatoes to be harvested for storage, the layout of the terrain is inconvenient, previously much more surfacing was necessary, a lot of people have seen messing around in the mud. Shuttle buses deploy sadly after the fair, too cheap, bus company already used more buses than requested. Still waiting 45 minutes in the drizzle and cold. It is understandable that exhibitors are stirring, this display is not worth the cost. Press release with 10.000 visitors was ready in advance, I doubt whether they came. Thanks to the contacts with other visitors and exhibitors who made the most of it, it was still worth the effort to travel 280 km, but this was a sad display, unworthy of an organization like DLG.
